Optimizer compatibility

What does my system need to be compatible for the Optimizer?

Outlook on Windows (Perpetual Versions)

  1. Office 2021

    • Browser: WebView2 (Microsoft Edge Chromium-based)
    • Note: Applies to both retail and volume-licensed versions.
  2. Office 2019

    • Retail License:
      • With WebView2 installed: WebView2 (Microsoft Edge Chromium-based)
      • Without WebView2 installed: EdgeHTML (Microsoft Edge Legacy) or Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11)
    • Volume-Licensed: Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11)
  3. Office 2016

    • Retail License:
      • With WebView2 installed: WebView2 (Microsoft Edge Chromium-based)
      • Without WebView2 installed: EdgeHTML (Microsoft Edge Legacy) or Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11)
    • Volume-Licensed: Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11)

Outlook on Windows (Subscription Versions)

For Microsoft 365 subscription versions, the embedded browser depends on the combination of the Windows version, Office version, and WebView2 installation status.

  1. Windows 11 or Windows 10 (version 1903 or later)

    • Office Version 16.0.13530.20424 or later:
      • With WebView2 installed: WebView2 (Microsoft Edge Chromium-based)
      • Without WebView2 installed: EdgeHTML (Microsoft Edge Legacy)
    • Office Version 16.0.11629 to 16.0.13530.20424: EdgeHTML (Microsoft Edge Legacy)
    • Office Version before 16.0.11629: Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11)
  2. Windows 10 (version earlier than 1903) or Windows 8.1: Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11)

  3. Windows 7: Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11)

Outlook on Other Platforms

  • Outlook on Mac
  • Outlook on the web
  • Outlook on iOS
  • Outlook on Android
  • Outlook.com

All these platforms support Outlook add-ins using modern web standards, eliminating concerns about the embedded browser or webview control type.

Additional Notes

  • WebView2: For Windows versions prior to Windows 11, WebView2 must be installed manually if not included with your Office version.
  • Trident+ Limitations: If your add-in relies on JavaScript features beyond ES5 or modern HTML5 features, consider using polyfills or transpiling your code to ensure compatibility with Trident+ (Internet Explorer 11).
